How To choose the right self-storage type?
At Cuboid, we offer two main types of storage:
external container storage units and
internal self storage rooms. Our container units are available at most locations and are ideal for personal belongings, furniture, garden tools, business stock or anything bulky that needs to be kept safe and dry. These 20-foot steel units are fully ventilated, weatherproof, and located in gated compounds with 24/7 CCTV. Plus, you can drive right up to the door, making loading and unloading a breeze.
If you prefer something indoors, our internal storage units, available at selected sites like Northwich, Barnsley and Hull, are perfect for items that need extra protection from the elements. These clean, secure indoor spaces are ideal for everything from student bits and bobs to archive files or business equipment. They’re temperature-controlled, well-lit and monitored, with automated access systems for convenience.
What you can and can’t store in a self-storage unit?
You can store most household or business items with us, but there are a few exceptions. Things like furniture, boxes, documents, sports gear, tools and seasonal decorations are all welcome. However, we can’t accept anything flammable, perishable or illegal, so items like petrol, gas canisters, food, plants or fireworks are a no-go. If you’re ever unsure about a specific item, just give us a call and we’ll happily advise.
How do you recommend I pack with care and stay organised?
Packing your storage unit properly makes life much easier in the long run. Start by using strong boxes with lids, and label everything clearly so you know what’s where. Wrap anything fragile with bubble wrap or paper and stack your boxes carefully.
We recommend heavier items at the bottom and lighter ones on top. It’s also helpful to leave a small path down the middle of the unit so you can access things at the back if you need to.
If you’ll need regular access to certain items, such as tools or business stock, keep them at the front of the unit where they’re easy to grab.
Have you considered ventilation and protection of your items?
Our containers are ventilated to reduce condensation, but it’s still a good idea to pack with ventilation in mind. Avoid plastic bags, as they trap moisture, and instead use breathable materials like cardboard or fabric. If you’re storing for a long time, moisture absorbers can help keep things fresh. Cleaning everything before you store it, especially appliances or outdoor gear, also helps prevent mould and unwanted smells.
Do I have 24/7 access to my self-storage unit?
Most Cuboid locations offer 24/7 access, so you can get to your belongings whenever it suits you. Before you move in, make sure you’ve got your access code or key sorted, and familiarise yourself with the layout of the site. Should I keep an inventory of what's in my storage unit?
When you’ve packed up your unit, it’s a good idea to keep a quick list of what’s inside. You could take photos on your phone, write down what’s in each box, or use a spreadsheet - whatever works for you. It’ll save time down the line if you ever need to check or retrieve something.
